5 Phoenix

It’s been six months since Everly ghosted me. Clearly, the ex-con thing was a big deal. I can’t say I blame her, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about her. The way her lips felt against mine. The way her hips sway just enough when she walks. The tiny, crinkled line between her eyebrows when she came.

But life goes on. Even after your sins are paid for, they’re still lingering with you for the rest of your life. I honestly can’t say that I blame her.

On this busy Saturday the shop is full. King’s back and he’s already found the woman of his dreams. If only I could be so lucky.

My client wiggles around as I finish up the final lines on his rib piece, a scorpion holding a scythe. For a tough guy he’s been wiggling around since the second the needle grazed his skin. This is clearly a two session piece.

“We’re done?” My client’s eyes are huge, filled with relief.

“For today. You’ll have to come back to finish.” His disappointment is palpable. I tried to warn him that a rib piece is a bad idea for your first tattoo. It’s the most sensitive spot.

The shop assistant cleans my station while I settle up the payment with my client. Then I head up to the front to ask Ronnie, King’s woman and our shop manager, who my next client is.

“Perfect timing, Phoenix.” She says, stepping to the side. I can hardly believe my eyes. “This is your next appointment—”

“Ev?” My voice comes out a weakened whisper.

“Hi,” she says, those steely blue eyes of hers shining in my direction. I want to take her into my arms, ask her where the hell she went? Tell her how I haven’t been able to stop thinking of her since the moment I woke up and she was gone.

“You two know each other?” Ronnie’s eyes dart back and forth between the two of us.

“Yep,” I say, and to my own surprise, turn and walk away. The two women keep talking, but I have to move away. It’s not like me, running from a situation, but if I stay I’ll end up throwing her over my shoulder and taking her back to my place. To demand answers, yes. But to show her how much I’ve missed her. Press myself against her, inside of her.

And considering she left like she did, I’m not sure that’s what Everly wants from me. The thought sinks my stomach. This is stupid. I turn back to Everly and find her closer behind me than I thought.

“Whoa,” she says, giggling. I wish I could smile and blow this off so easily. Even though it was one night, I felt we made a connection. Even big, tough ex-cons get their feelings hurt now and then. “Hi.”

“Hi.” My brain swims. “Are you here for a tattoo?”

“Not exactly.” She fidgets with her fingernails. “It’s more like, I’m here for a tattoo artist.” My mouth bobs open but no words come out.
